The Background

Mine Warfare and Diving are extremely significant components of naval combat operations… that part of Portsmouth once occupied by HMS Vernon, the previous alma mater of these two sub-specialisations, was sold by the MoD over ten years ago, to a property development company.

In 1996, all the various Service activities were relocated elsewhere. Since then, the whole site has been transformed into a retail and residential complex known as Gunwharf Quays.

Thankfully, great efforts have been made to preserve aspects of the unique historical legacy associated with this part of Portsmouth: some ex-Royal Navy underwater weapons have been refurbished and put on show in the public areas by the waterside; in the old Customs House building, a range of photographs covering the period 1940-1990 adorns the walls of the bars and restaurant;

Yet there's something missing, to remind us all of something that once had a distinct relevance in HMS Vernon... the people. This monument will be a lasting tribute to naval Mine Warfare and Diving including the mine warfare specialists, divers and everyone else vital to conducting, teaching and supporting these operations, ashore and afloat, particularly those who passed through the gates of the Royal Navy’s long-time alma mater at HMS Vernon.
