For John Terry to have captured this scene so vividly is a significant tribute to all those personnel based in HMS Vernon during this period. The painting and the highly-collectible full colour prints will form an enduring part of of Project Vernon's aim to commemorate the heritage of HMS Vernon and the close-knit community that worked there for so many years.

"In the mid-1970's, a range of vessels were home-based in HMS Vernon, notably the Second MCM Squadron, proudly wearing the Hampshire Rose as their funnel badge. RNR "Ton" Class Coastal minehunters and minesweepers, "Ham" Class Inshore Minesweepers, Survey Vessels, Diving Tenders, RNXS Auxiliary Craft, the RMAS cross-harbour ferry running to HMS Dolphin: the list of ships operating out of Vernon Creek was extensive. They all needed berths and shore support.
Many played a regular, key part in the Royal Navy's seagoing training cycle... it was always a busy, dynamic waterfont, especially when hosting MCM Squadron meets and NATO exercises...
Familiar navigation marks at the time included the Old Portsmouth power station's chimney stacks, the conspicuous Cathedral tower's roof, HMS Vernon's boiler house exhaust, the diving test tank and, of course, the Vernon flagstaff with the White Ensign.
There are few such surviving features today - the grey warship hulls have been replaced by white luxury yachts in what is now the Gunwharf Quays marina.."
